Something great had to be produced from my failed marriages!
As peculiar as this may sound, I consider my experiences with divorce as my most noteworthy teachings in what it takes to make a marriage work. Couples Who Thrive (Not Just Survive) in Marriage!: A 30-Day Workbook for Making Your Marriage Great is a product of turning my pain into my passion for coaching couples to enhance and strengthen their marriages.
As a Certified Family Life Educator I have read countless research articles and books, while in graduate school, about what makes family systems both rise and fall. As a divorcee I have learned this firsthand while taking notes along the way. The key ingredient in the formula for making marriages great can be summed up in one simple word – work. If you’re willing to do the work, you’re bound to reap the rewards.
It’s no revelation that many marriages today are in trouble. At a time when divorce rates continue to increase, and the decision to start families before marriage have become social norms, I firmly believe that through diligent and committed daily work, couples can benefit from, thrive and enjoy lasting marriages. The message must be conveyed that marriage requires work – hard work! Marriage consists of two people from different backgrounds merging all of their life’s experiences, traditions and perceptions into one household and one union. This is not always easy. Some practices, habits and ways of thinking will have to be reversed or omitted completely, while some will merge seamlessly. Couples must make compromises, and commit to doing the work necessary to live together harmoniously while growing and learning together.
Marriage is a selfless commitment to unconditional love. It requires giving, consideration and a willingness to keep the lines of communication open, even when throwing in the towel seems easier. Believe that the bumps and bruises will heal and you can choose to allow any remaining scars to serve as reminders of how, together, you overcame the challenges.
In this workbook, Couples Who Thrive (Not Just Survive) in Marriage!: A 30-Day Workbook for Making Your Marriage Great, I invite couples to journal as they journey towards saving troubled marriages and making good marriages great. Do the work – it’s worth it!
Commit to the work that causes you to thrive, not just survive, in marriage!
I’m rooting for you!
